What is a franchise?

“A franchise is the granting of a license by one person (the franchisor) to another (the franchisee), which entitles the franchisee to trade under the trade mark/trade name of the franchisor and to make use of an entire package, comprising all the elements necessary to establish a previously untrained person in the business and to run it with continued assistance on a predetermined basis” (British Franchise Association).

Introduction to the Jigalong Babes franchise

Firstly, allow me to introduce myself. I am a qualified school music teacher with an interest in child development and self-expression. Musical Playtime, my other franchise, developed from a need to carry on working when my eldest children were at school and I had another baby. Eighteen years on these classes are still very successful. During Musical Playtime sessions I notice the smiles on peoples faces when they join in a barn dance or gallop around the hall together. This gave me the idea for an exercise class for mums with new babies which includes movements from various disciplines; yoga, quigong, fitness and dance. Jigalong Babes gives mums an opportunity to get together with other mums and enjoy a fun class together. Babies will be stimulated and learn from the experience too. Each session lasts for about 35 minutes but can be extended so that mums can socialise afterwards.

What the franchise/license consists of

As a franchisee you would be entitled to run Jigalong Babes classes within an agreed area (your territory) at times and places of your choosing. You will probably run the classes in a hall you have hired for the purpose or in a clinic. If you purchase the programme as a licensee you might use it with a group of friends and perhaps charge them a small fee for taking part.

The Jigalong Babes package consists of a manual of how to run the programme plus session plans for a year - 36 weeks divided into 3 terms. These are then repeated each year. The music for the sessions is in running order on 18 compilation CDs (2 sessions per CD) making it easy to run the classes. Some original CDs are also included in the package.

What are the costs?

Whether you use the programme as a franchisee or licensee the costs are the same. The initial cost is £400 which includes the franchise package and training if required. There is also a monthly license fee of £25 for unlimited use of the programme within your specified territory. For this you will be entitled to ongoing help and support via email, phone and website.

Depending on how much equipment you already have equipment costs should be less than £150 for a class of 12 mums and their babies. As you are self-employed you can claim tax relief for capital expenses which includes the cost of equipment.

You must take out a personal liability insurance policy (~£110) per annum and the hire of halls will cost between £10-£20 depending on where you live.

Is training included?

Yes, training is included although you will be expected to pay for accommodation if you stay overnight.

What is not included?

You will be expected to purchase your own equipment to run the classes.  Advertising will also be up to you although a template to help you will be included in the franchise package.

What qualities do I need?

You need to be fit in order to demonstrate some of the movements, have a bubbly personality to encourage everyone to participate, good communication skills and an appreciation of the stresses involved around having a baby.

Can I take my child with me?

Yes, if they are very young and not running around yet but not if they are going to be a distraction to other mums.

What income can I expect?

If you charge £4 a session for each mother and their baby you will earn £48 for a class of 12 for a 35 minute session plus 25 minutes social time. You would have to deduct from this the cost of hiring the hall. The intention is that Jigalong Babes classes are affordable to all and the amount charged will vary depending on the area where you live.

What do I need to do first?

Approach anti-natal and post-natal groups at your local hospital to see if they would be interested in attending a Jigalong Babes class. Your classes can follow-on from post-natal exercise classes. NCT (National Childbirth Trust) groups may like a regular session with you.
